Kangaroo Island Wildlife - Marsupials

Grey Kangaroos

NOT FOUND ON Kangaroo Island

Two species of Grey Kangaroo

  • Western Grey Macropus fuliginosus (Black faced, Mallee or Sooty Kangaroo)
  • Eastern Grey; Macropus giganteus

Distinguishable by colour (grey fur)

Occur in mobs up to 50 - mainly female and young

Active dawn and dusk resting during the day

Preferred habitat is scrub or woodland

Feeds in grassy plains

Often seen in Deep Creek conservation Park and around Myponga. Keep a look out if you are going down to Blow Hole creek. Another good area for spotting these kangaroos is on the grassy areas on the way to Tapanapa lookout in Deep Creek National Park.
