About Tasmania

Wineglass Bay

Wineglass Bay with Mt Amos in the background.

For most Australians Tasmania is known as a wilderness holiday destination, hiking and outdoor activities in the mountains are the most common images which come to mind.

It is also considered a very remote place, a place where development is limited and where it is still possible to roam around the bush without mobile phone reception and without running into hordes of tourists.

It's known as one of the last places on earth to contain vast tracts of wilderness, which protects countless numbers of plants and animals, and for most Australians, the protection of this wilderness is a passionate subject and one which has caused many demonstrations and protests in an effort to stop the building of dams or the logging of forests.

Tassie is many things, but is all of the above, if you yearn to escape society for a few days then Tassie is perfect, as one past Passenger on a Rugged Tours said: "It's the perfect way to get away from this crazy society and into nature."

Everything you need to know about Tasmania can be found in this excellent wiki article: Tasmania on Wiki here's a summary:

"Tasmania (abbreviated as Tas) is an island state 240 kilometres (150 mi) to the south of the Australian continent, separated by the Bass Strait. The state includes the island of Tasmania, the 26th largest island in the world, and the surrounding 334 islands. The state has a population of 507,626 (as of June 2010), of whom almost half reside in the greater Hobart precinct. Tasmania's area is 68,401 square kilometres (26,410 sq mi), of which the main island covers 62,409 square kilometres (24,096 sq mi).

Tasmania is promoted as the natural state, the "Island of Inspiration",and A World Apart, Not A World Away owing to its large and relatively unspoiled natural environment. Almost 37% of Tasmania lies in reserves, national parks and World Heritage Sites. The island is 364 kilometres (226 mi) long from its northernmost to its southernmost points, and 306 kilometres (190 mi) from west to east."

About Travelwild Australia

Travelwild Logo

We are an Australian based tour operator who began running small group Adventure Tours for backpackers and active travelers on Kangaroo Island in 1998. We started with a 2 day 4WD Camping Tour, and today are proud to offer over 30 high quality small group adventure tours from Kakadu and the Kimberley in the north, to the Outback and Ayers Rock in the centre to Kangaroo Island in the South.

Travelwild Tours are either "Travelwild Operated Tours" run by Travelwild, or "Travelwild Partner Tours" run by our partners who share our passion for Small Group, Active Adventure Tours.

Either way your tour will be led by a professional local guide, you'll visit out of the way places the busses and crowds don't go, you will have quality camping equipment and good food. The small groups allow plenty of time to have fun and explore.

Join one of these tours and we guarantee you will have an experience you'll never forget as you camp, hike, swim and canoe your way through the Australian Wilderness.

Small Groups, 4WD Vehicles, Local Knowledge, Adventure Activities and Active People is quite simply a recipe for a great tour, suprising few tour operators understand this simple fact.

  • Small Groups. Our small group Australian tours are kept small because they allow for better access to remote areas, creates less environmental impact and creates a much better tour dynamic. The reality is that big bus groups suffer because guides are too busy organizing a large group rather than guiding. If you want to meet other people and fun as a group, keep it small!
  • 4WD Vehicles. They may not be the most comfortable vehicles around, but if you want to get the best spots in Australia without the crowds you need to divert down some of our 4WD only dirt tracks. If you are prepared to rough it, then you'll be rewarded.
  • Local Knowledge is vital if you expect your guide to know what they are doing. Each Travelwild Tour is owned and operated by local individuals who live and love where they tour.
  • Adventure Activities are the best way to experience pristine wilderness areas, hiking, swimming, climbing, bush camping and canoeing (on selected tours) gets you into the bush and away from the crowds.
  • Active People, most passengers who travel are between 18 and 39, come from all over the world, lead active lives and enjoy the outdoors, (most groups are around 50% males and females). If you want to have fun on tour, it's important you travel with people you can relate to.
