Flinders Chase National Park, which encompasses the Ravine des Casoars Wilderness Protection Area, covers an area of approximately 73920 Hectares (739 square kilometres). It is the largest National Park on Kangaroo Island and takes up the entire western end of the Island

Flinders Chase is one of the oldest National Parks in South Australia dating from late 1919. Early conservationists were concerned at the loss of habitat on mainland Australia and of the potential extinction of Native Wildlife, so Flinders Chase was set aside as a refuge for wildlife and many animals were introduced from the mainland in the 1920s and 1930s. By the 1940s a total of 23 species had been introduced, including Koalas in 1923 and Platypus in 1928. Most of these species can still be seen today.

Flinders Chase National Park gets it's name from Matthew Flinders, an English explorer who landed on, and named Kangaroo Island, (for it's abundance of Kangaroo's we assume? Not a very creative name but one which has definitely helped the island's tourism industry) in 1802 on his voyage in which was the first person to circumnavigate Australia.
