Litchfield National Park
Litchfield National Park is approximatelt 1.5 hours drive from Darwin, is a a relatively small National Park (in relation to Kakadu) and contains many beautiful waterfalls with a small area, all waterfalls a very accessable and flow all year round with crystal clear water you can happily drink. There is also a number of short walks which we can do, inparticular at Wangi falls and Tolmer falls.
We vist the main destinations of Florence Falls, Buley Rock Hole, Wangi Falls, Tolmer Falls and the famous magnetic ternite mounds.
Heading for Kakadu campsite at the end of the day we visit the Marrakai Floodplain. The Marrakai Floodplain is a fantastic location for viewing a huge array of the native birdlife which lives in Kakadu. We then arrive at our campsite in the early evening and cook up a feast on the campfire. (Dinner). (Lunch, Dinner).
Day 2, Nourlangie Rock Art
One of the highlights of the tour is a 1.5 hour Private Wildlife and Crocodile Cruise at Corroboree Billabong. Corroboree Billabong is part of the Mary River system. The system is teaming with crocodiles and birdlife and the cruise is the perfect way to get up close to it all, there are ample opportunities for photography and it won't leave you disappointed.
After the cruise we head for Bowali Visitor Centre, this is a fantastic facility which contains ample information on Kakadu National Park via the many interactive displays.
Our next destination is Ubirr Rock, made famous in the Crocodile Dundee movie, Urirr is not only a scenically beautiful destination, it also contains a huge concentration of Aboriginal art. Amoung the many paintings are those of tall timber ships from 200 years ago to the now extinct Tasmanian Tiger, which lived on mainland Australia until around 2000 years ago. Ubirr is recognised as one of the most famous rock art and cultural sites in the world. A short climb to the top of Ubirr Rock will reward you with a 360 degree view over floodplains and the Arnhem Land Escarpment, a spectacular sight.
Another cultural experience awaits at Nourlangie Rock where you will be able to see paintings which are estimated to be over 20,000 years old. The rock art depicts mainly wildlife and Dreamtime stories.
The views from our next destination, Nawurlandja Lookout are spectacular, especially across to “Lightning Dreaming” on the Arnhemland Escarpment. Tonight after a candlelit dinner in the heart of Kakadu, you can have a go at playing the didgeridoo around the campfire. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 3, Jim Jim Falls Gorge
Today we get into the bush with our 4wd vehicle and make our way to Twin Falls. At Twin falls you will enjoy an informative boat cruise with an Aboriginal Guide along the Twin Falls Gorge. At the end of the gorge, where the clean water cascades over the high falls, you will find a beautiful white sandy beach, this place is simply paradise.
We then make our way to Jim Jim falls via another 4WD only track which crosses sandy tracks and rivers. After a short hike through a monsoon rainforest we reach the base of Jim Jim Falls where another beautiful sandy beach and crystal clear water awaits. It's possible to swim in the plunge pool at the base of Jim Jim Falls and it's very refreshing after the hike. The sheer cliffs that surround you from the base of the gorge are simply spectacular.
We then watch the sunset on the way back into Darwin.(Breakfast, Lunch.)
