Day 1, Adelaide River Croc Cruise
Day 1, Sunset in Kakadu
The 2 day Kakadu Tour starts bright and early from Darwin and heads straight for the Adelaide River where you will join a Jumping Crocodile and Wildlife Cruise. The river is teaming with Birdlife and Saltwater Crocodiles and seeing them feeding is an incredible sight.
Nourlangie Rock Aboriginal Artisite is one of the best examples of Rock Art in the world, and Nourlangie Rock not only displays large stunning works of Art, some thousands of years old, but the walls of the Nourlangie Rock area have served as a shelter and canvas for 20,000+ years providing windows to a rich spiritual tradition. Paintings such as Namarrgon, lightening man, explore the relationship of the people to their country and beliefs.
White lilly Billabong is located on the old Darwin road, a dirt road in Kakadu, and is home to many species of Bird, we often stop at this secluded destination for lunch.
Kakadu is home to thousands of creatures, and believe it or not one of the most interesting is a humble termite! Termites in Kakadu build incredible structures called Cathedral Termite mounds. the mounds can be up to 4 metres high, not a bad effort considering they are built by a tiny termite no bigger than 9mm long. (Comparing this to human efforts, it would equate to an 800 metre high sky scraper, currently the tallest building in the world is 509 metres in Taipei, Taiwan). These tiny creatures have an amazing life and nests are populated by thousands of workers and queens who can live up to 100 years old!
Yellow Waters Billabong is a land locked billabong brimming with native flora and fauna and is one of Kakadu National Park’s best known landmarks. It is home to crocodiles, wild horses, buffalo and other wildlife. The billabong also attracts millions of migratory birds each year, including jacana, egrets, jabiru, sea eagles, magpie geese and many other native species. The tour arrives at Yellwo Water in time for the Sunset which is absolutely stunning.
After sunset we drive at night towards Jim Jim Campground where we'll cook up a bush BBQ feast and get an early start to explore Jim Jim and Twin Falls on day 2.
Highlights
Jim Jim and Twin Falls, 2 of the jewels in the Kakadu Crown, massive water falls, deep plunge pools fringed with sheer rock walls, green vegetation and even beaches. These really are special places and the final day of this 2 Day Kakadu Tour are devoted to these destinations.
The morning is spent hiking to the base of Jim Jim Falls Kakadu through monsoonal rainforest, here you will find a large deep plunge pool, towering cliffs and even sandy beaches where you can relax and swim in what is truly paradise.
After lunch head for Twin Falls, this short 4WD track from Jim Jim to Twin Falls is an adventure in itself as a deep water river crossing by the 4WD at Jim Jim Creek is required.
At Twin Falls enjoy a leisurely walk and boat cruise through the gorge to the base of the falls itself, this cruise is informative and is operated by Kakadu National Park.
It's then onto the Bowali Visitor Centre, designed by the Aboriginal owners of Kakadu National Park, Bowali provides a wealth of information on the culture and tradional lifestyles of the Aboriginal People who continue to inhabbit Kakadu today.
On the way back into Darwin we stop off at Fogg Dam for another top end sunset, Fogg Dam has a huge reptile population and with luck we'll find a water python. Return to Darwin is normally around 8pm.

Day 1, Wet Season Storm Brewing
Nourlangie Art Site
Ubirr Rock Sunset
The Wet season in Kakadu National Park is considered by many as the best time of year to visit, the weather is extremely humid however relieving heavy monsoonal rain in the afternoons is both welcome and amazing. At times huge electrical storms put on a fireworks display like nothing you have ever seen.
Kakadu is transformed into a green paradise with flowing rivers, thundering waterfalls and large wetlands full of wildlife, waterfalls which don't flow in the dry season start up and best of all there are far fewer tourists, so when you visit an area you often have it all to yourself.
There is a great variety of opening and closing of destinations during this time which is largely dependant on how much water is covering access roads, for this reason it is very difficult to publish a standard itinerary, as each tour will vary.
Typically the 2 day Kakadu Tour starts bright and early from Darwin and heads straight for the Adelaide River where you will join a Jumping Crocodile and Wildlife Cruise.
Ubirr Rock. Ubirr not only contains hundreds examples of Aboriginal Rock Art, many spiritually significant, but a short steep climb provides one of the best views in Northern Australia of the East Alligator floodplains and Arnhemland. Access to Ubirr is dependant on the road which is often flooded.
A six Kilomtere hike reveals a stunning area called Gubara, or Boralbda Springs, a beautiful series of waterholes and cascading waterfalls where you can swim and relax in the cool pools which are surrounded by lush monsoonal rainforest and big colourfull buterflys.
Nawurlandja near Nourlangie Rock is a 600 metre climb and the perfect spot to view spectacular lightning storms from the lookout.
The tour arrives at Yellow Water in time for the Sunset which is absolutely stunning.
The Wet Season Camp is an all weather bush camp which is Mosquito and rain proof. Settle in for a BBQ feast and try the didgeridoo around the campfire.

Day 2, Yumilmik (Motor Car Falls)
Cathederal Termite Mound
Day 2 of the 2 day Kakadu Tour is full of hiking through monsoonal rainforest full of wildlife and bush tucker and swimming in crystal clear fresh water waterfalls and plunge pools.
Boulder Creek, Yumikmik (Motor Car Falls) & Kurrundie Creek Falls are 3 sensational wet season destinations which do not flow during the dry season.
Yumikmik (Motor car falls) is reached by hiking a couple of Kilometers through open savannah style country through to a monsoonal rainforest lined creek and ultimately to the base of a high waterfall and large plunge pool, again swimming is sensational in the deep cool and crystal clear water.
These tiny creatures have an amazing life cycle and nests are populated by thousands of workers and queens who can live up to 100 years old!
Highlights
Some areas in Kakadu are considered safe to swim, for example above waterfalls where crocodiles cannot reach, and some areas are considered dangerous, for example wet lands. Many swimming areas in Kakadu National Park are only opened after extensive crocodile surveys and trapping have been completed by the National Parks.
Although National Parks staff monitor and remove Salt Water Crocodiles from public swimming areas, there is a risk that some Crocodiles are missed and or Crocodiles enter the surveyed area undetected. Travelwild Australia do not guarantee that any swimming area in Kakadu is Crocodile free and all tour participants should consider this when deciding to swim.
Jim Jim and Twin Falls, which are quite close to each other, close every Wet Season because the rain makes access difficult, during this time the abundance of water means that Salt Water Crocodiles spread out in an effort to secure territory, each year some Salt Water Crocodiles find there way into the swimming areas at Jim Jim Falls Kakadu.
Before openning Jim Jim Falls Kakadu for swimming, the Natioanl Parks must ensure no crocs are present, because of this Jim Jim is normally not open untill June, it then normally remains open through to November. Although swimming is nor permitted at the base of Twin Falls, because it is on the same access road it's openning and closing times are very similar to Jim Jim's
